Primer on New English Translation of the Roman Missal out

A Catechetical Primer on the New English Translation of the Roman Missal has been published by the Episcopal Commission on Liturgy (ECL) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). The Primer, written by Fr. Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB, director of the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy, will be launched on June 24, 2011 at 5 p.m. at the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines voted for the adoption of the new English translation of the Roman Missal for the Philippines during its plenary assembly in January 2010. The new English translation will be used starting December 2, 2012. The Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship granted the recognitio requested by the ECL, which will issue a decree in July to announce the implementation of the new English translation.

Fr. Chupungco’s Catechetical Primer will be a very useful tool and resource during the period of catechesis that shall be observed prior to the implementation, to prepare the clergy and the laity for the major changes in translation. Regarded as the “Dean of Filipino liturgists,” Fr. Chupungco is considered eminently qualified to write the Primer.

Dr. Josefina Manabat, dean of the Graduate School of Liturgy of San Beda College says, “Proficient knowledge of both the source language (Latin) and the target language (English) combined with solid liturgical scholarship and adeptness in the scientific method of translation–this is the formula that produced the Catechetical Primer.”

The local publication of the new English translation of the Roman Missal will make it available to local parishes at a more economical price. The locally published new English translation will incorporate local celebrations such as the Misa de Aguinaldo or Simbang Gabi, the feast of the Sto. Niño, and the proper of saints. This will be available in June 2012.

The Catechetical Primer on the New English Translation of the Roman Missal will be sold at a discount during the launching and at the regular price of P100 after.

    This is great news. However, for those of us doing pastoral ministry with Filipino American communities in US, my utmost concern is our NEED for the NEW translation of the Roman Missal in Tagalog [our national language] which is often used at the Misa de Aguinaldo or Simbang Gabi. Does this mean, therefore, that without the new Tagalog translation we should stick to the new English text and toss out the old? Hmmm, they are just quite too convoluted to the Filipino mind. Huh? Anyway, any info on NEW Tagalog translation is very much appreciated.

    To my knowledge, the current Tagalog translation is still in use, and no immediate plans for its revision are forthcoming. I will confirm that with my sources.

    Good day! This is a blessing for us and for the Church.

    Last January 2011, we had a seminar-workshop at the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy, Bukidnon, that was conducted by the Episcopal Commission on Liturgy through PIL and Liturgical Commission of Manila.

    We had a workshop wherein we tried to translate important parts of the Mass in our vernacular. I presume that in the near future, the Missal in the vernacular will be revised.

    The Bicol Region already had their Missal revised and implemented according to L.A. Others will follow…

    So, as of now, we will focus first on the Vacatio Legis through catechesis of our faithful on the upcoming new Roman Missal. The vernacular Missals will follow.

    I am shocked to hear that Fr. Anscar Chupungco, the “Dean of Filipino liturgists” is taking an active role in preparing my countrymen in the new English translation of the Roman Missal. A few months ago, he was at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila for a talk where he criticized this change as well as Benedict XVI’s ‘reform of the reform’. I just read the news about that talk and was all-out support for him; I wrote a comment on the University’s website commending him. Another reader thought otherwise and branded him and me as ‘termites in the Church’.

    I was hoping that this Benedictine monk would follow the footsteps of another colleague, Fr Anthony Ruff.

    I find it really strange that Fr Chupungco made a U-turn!

    You should read the Primer. Fr. Chupungco is still Fr. Chupungco. His views can be read between the lines. But as a loyal son of the Church, he prepared the primer since there will be a need for it given that the new translation will be implemented whether anyone likes it or not.

    I’d rather support for the former President of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute and Rector of the Ateneo San’t Anselmo than get affected amateurs who claim they know liturgy and then resort to petty name calling. Very un-Christian.

    I am writing to you this letter because our school badly needs a copy of Tagalog Roman Missal for our masses during the month of August as it is declared as the BUWAN NG WIKA. With this, may I know if how can I be able to have a Filipino Language Roman Missal? Thank you po and God bless 🙂
